What is a relay?

A relay is an automatic switching device that works on the electromagnetic principle and is used to achieve functions such as signal amplification, electrical isolation, logic control or remote control in a circuit. It controls large currents through small currents.

What Types of Relays?

General-purpose Relays

General-purpose relays are an automatic switching element widely used in electrical control systems. Their core function is to control the on and off of large current loads through small current signals to achieve circuit isolation, amplification or logic control.

Control Relays

Control Relays are core components used for logic control, signal amplification and electrical isolation in electrical automation systems. They receive control signals (such as voltage, current or digital signals) to drive contact action to achieve on/off, switching or delay control of load circuits. Their core value lies in driving high-power loads with low-power signals and building flexible automation logic.

Monitoring Relay

Monitoring Relay is an intelligent relay that is dedicated to real-time monitoring of electrical parameters (such as voltage, current, frequency, phase, etc.) and triggering protection actions when abnormalities occur.

Its core function is to continuously monitor the operating status of the power system or equipment through high-precision sensors and logic judgment circuits, and quickly cut off the circuit or issue an alarm when the parameters exceed the safety threshold, thereby avoiding equipment damage and ensuring stable system operation.

Timing Relays

Timing Relays are an automation component dedicated to achieving time delay control.

Its core function is to control the contact action according to preset time parameters (such as delayed closing, delayed opening) after receiving the trigger signal through the built-in timing circuit (mechanical or electronic), thereby introducing the time dimension into the circuit and achieving precise timing management of logic control and automation processes.

Safety Relays

Safety Relays are fail-safe control components designed for high-risk industrial scenarios. Their core mission is to reliably cut off the risk source and maintain a safe state when personnel, equipment or environment are facing potential dangers through redundant design, forced guided contacts, self-diagnosis functions and other mechanisms, so as to avoid accidents or reduce the degree of harm.

Their application scope covers areas with strict safety requirements such as machinery manufacturing, automobile production lines, and chemical equipment. We offer reliable safety relays for machinery control from brands like Omron.

Relay Module

Relay Module is an integrated and standardized electrical control component that encapsulates a single or multiple relays and their drive circuits, protection components, interface terminals, etc. in a modular housing, and realizes on-off control of the load circuit through external signals (such as voltage, current, digital signals).

Its core value lies in simplifying electrical system design, improving reliability and reducing installation costs. It is widely used in industrial automation, smart home, energy management, security monitoring and other fields.

Terminal Block Relays

Terminal Block Relays are electrical control components that deeply integrate relay functions with terminal block structures. Through modular design, relay contacts, drive circuits, wiring terminals, status indicators, etc. are integrated into standardized units and directly installed on the DIN rail of the power distribution cabinet or control box.

Its core value lies in simplifying on-site wiring, improving installation efficiency, and reducing maintenance costs, while taking into account electrical isolation, signal amplification, and multi-channel control functions.

How to troubleshoot and prevent relay contact sticking?

Troubleshooting:
Appearance inspection (contact erosion/spacing), multimeter to measure on-off resistance, oscilloscope to monitor arc, load simulation temperature measurement (<85℃), and voltage drop (<0.5V).

Prevention: When selecting, the load current should be ≤80% of the contact rating, and the inductive load should be equipped with an RC buffer circuit or a diode for continuous current; avoid frequent on-off (<30 times/minute), and apply an anti-oxidant in high temperature and high humidity environments.

How to select solid-state relays (SSR) and electromagnetic relays (EMR)?

Contact failure requires a matching load + arc extinguishing design

When selecting, use SSR for high frequency/explosion-proof and EMR for high current/low cost. A dual redundant design (SSR+EMR in parallel) can be used for complex scenarios.

Choosing a Relay

There are several key factors to consider when choosing the right relay for your scenario. Keep the following in mind when choosing:

Basic Working Principle of Relays

  • The electromagnetic coil is energized to generate a magnetic field, which attracts the armature to drive the contacts to close or open, thereby controlling the on and off of the circuit.
  • Because of its characteristic of "small current controlling large current", it is called an electric control switch.

Relay components

  • Electromagnetic coilgenerates magnetic force
  • Contactsconducts/cuts off the circuit
  • Armaturetransmits mechanical force
  • Spring : resets contacts

Mechanical relays switch via physical contacts, while solid-state relays (SSRs) switch without contacts using semiconductor devices (such as thyristors).

DC Motor Relay Selection

Select contact current ≥ 2 times the rated current of the motor, and give priority to models with arc extinguishing hoods;

inductive loads require parallel diodes/RC circuits to absorb back electromotive force to avoid contact spark erosion and adhesion.

Are there specific environmental conditions (e.g., temperature, humidity)?

Relays have specific operating temperature and humidity ranges (e.g., 0-40°C, 90% humidity).

If the environment is too hot, too cold, or too humid, the relay may malfunction or have a shortened lifespan.

Choosing a relay suitable for your environment is crucial, as some models are designed for harsh conditions.

5.How many relays are required for forward and reverse control of a three-phase motor?

At least two contactors (high-power relays) are required to switch the phase sequence and cooperate with the interlock circuit to prevent a short circuit due to simultaneous power on.

Accessories

We carry a wide variety of accessories to go along with our robust selection of motor controls. Some of these accessories include the following options:

Contacts

Contacts are key components in relays that enable or disable circuits.

They are connected or separated from fixed contacts by the action of the armature, thereby controlling the connection or disconnection of external circuits.

The performance of contacts directly affects the reliability and service life of relays.

Coil

The coil is the core component of the relay that generates electromagnetic force. The current flowing through its winding generates a magnetic field, providing a driving force for the relay to operate.

When current passes through the coil, a magnetic field is formed inside it, attracting the armature to move, thereby changing the state of the contacts and realizing the on-off control of the circuit.

FAQs when choosing a relay

Why do we need to configure an intermediate relay in a low-voltage power distribution cabinet?
It is used to expand control signals (such as when the PLC output port is insufficient), isolate strong and weak current circuits, and protect the controller from voltage shocks.
Are there specific environmental conditions (e.g., temperature, humidity)?
VFDs have specific operating temperature and humidity ranges (e.g., 0-40°C, 90% humidity). If the environment is too hot, cold, or humid, the VFD may malfunction or have a shortened lifespan. Choosing a VFD designed for your environment is crucial, as some models are built for harsh conditions.
How many relays are required for forward and reverse control of a three-phase motor?
At least two contactors (high-power relays) are required to switch the phase sequence and cooperate with the interlock circuit to prevent short circuit due to simultaneous power on.
