A quote can carry three different figures, because three denominators exist: the widest span, the span you configured, and the capsule’s minimum span. Read the denominator first, then the turndown at which the accuracy is stated. Simply Buy is a multi-brand distributor and supply-chain integrator, not a manufacturer, so the capsule you choose can be matched against the range you can check before it ships.

This article is for procurement and engineering buyers outside China who specify pressure instruments by part number: distributors, system integrators, EPC project buyers, and plant maintenance teams. By the end, you can name the denominator behind any range figure, restate an accuracy claim at your own span, and write an RFQ that stops a mis-ranged transmitter from arriving. Assumed knowledge: the 4-20 mA loop, zero and span, and the difference between gauge, absolute and differential pressure.

What Is a Turndown Ratio on a Pressure Transmitter?

The turndown ratio, sometimes called rangedown, is how far you can shrink a transmitter’s measurement span from the widest span the device allows. A 0-1000 psi transmitter with a 20:1 ratio can be set as narrow as 0-50 psi. The number only exists on a device with a continuous, re-scalable output, which is why a 4-20mA pressure sensor carries one and an on/off switch does not (pressure switch vs pressure sensor). The sensing element decides which ratios are possible at all.

The trap: a figure with no span, no pressure type and no accuracy condition is a sales number, not a specification. Three questions fix that: which span the ratio uses, at what turndown the accuracy is stated, and whether your process span fits the quoted capsule.

What Do URL, Span and Sensor Capsule Actually Mean?

Five terms carry every rangeability argument. The URL, or upper range limit, is the highest pressure the device can measure; the LRL, or lower range limit, is the lowest. The URV, or upper range value, is the calibrated top of your range and the 20 mA point, while the LRV, or lower range value, is the calibrated bottom and the 4 mA point. A sensor capsule, or sensor code, is the physical cell inside the housing, and it fixes both the URL and the smallest span the device accepts.

One worked ratio: a 1000 mbar URL with a 0-100 mbar range has a 100 mbar span, so the ratio is 10:1. The same cell set to -300 to 0 mbar has a 300 mbar span against the same URL, so the ratio is 3.33:1.

Why Does One Transmitter Have Three Turndown Figures?

Because vendors do not agree on what to divide by, and three sourced forms appear in the documents buyers receive.

Maximum allowable span divided by minimum allowable span is the capability framing used by the Control.com calibration textbook. It describes the range the instrument offers from widest to narrowest, and it does not change when you re-range.

URL divided by the calibrated span is the setting framing used by instrumentationtools (Transmitter Turndown Ratio, Set Span and Zero Span): what am I asking this device to do now?

URL divided by the minimum measurement range is the capsule framing used by Fuji Electric (What is the rangeability and turndown ratio of a pressure transmitter?): at its limit, what will this cell allow?

Which Denominator Should You Use?

Use two of them, for two questions. URL divided by your configured span is what you are asking for, and you compare it against the capsule before ordering. URL divided by the capsule’s minimum span is what the capsule allows, and that number decides whether your span is settable at all.

Skip the second question and the failure is concrete. A transmitter quoted at 20:1 with a 1000 psi URL has a 50 psi minimum span, so a 40 psi process span cannot be set on it, whatever the configuration software suggests. The fix is a different capsule or model, not a different setting.

Does a Higher Turndown Ratio Mean Better Accuracy?

Usually the opposite. Accuracy worsens as an instrument is turned down from its maximum span, and each vendor in the list below bounds it in a banded accuracy law. Reference accuracy is the base figure covering linearity, hysteresis and repeatability, before thermal and static-pressure terms are added.

The laws differ by vendor, so the accuracy you get depends on the model:

ABB, 266DSH, codes F to P: ±0.06% of span at 1:1 to 10:1, then ±(0.006 x TD)% up to 100:1.

Siemens, SITRANS P DS III: about (0.005 x r + 0.05)% for measuring span ratio r from 30 to 100.

Endress+Hauser, Cerabar M: up to ±0.15% of the set span, with thermal terms such as ±(0.1 + 0.15 x TD)% of span.

Rosemount, 3051 total-performance bands, Ranges 2 to 4: ±(0.025% URL + 0.125% span) at 1:1 to 30:1, then ±(0.035% URL + 0.125% span) to 150:1.

Yokogawa, EJA110E: ±0.055% of span above a capsule threshold, then ±(0.005 + a capsule coefficient x URL/span)% below it.

The condition that decides which figure applies, the turndown at which it is stated, sits away from the headline number and is easy to miss. Two of these figures are conditioned on 1:1. Endress+Hauser applies its total error to Turndown 1:1, and Siemens states that accuracy is only achieved at maximum measuring span.

A worked example: ABB’s F-to-P law at a ratio of 50 gives ±0.3%, five times the 0.06% the specification table advertises.

Whether you can hold that ratio depends on the output. A fixed-span analog transmitter such as the ifm PA3023 ships with its range set. The ifm PN3594 can be re-scaled in the field.

ifm electronic PN PN3594 Pressure Sensor

            Fabricante: ifm electronic
Modelo: PN3594
Serie: PN
Tipo: Sensor de presión con pantalla

        Ver detalles del producto

Why Is the Family Headline Turndown Not the Capsule That Ships?

A 100:1 headline usually describes the family or its widest capsule, so the cell that ships with your order can be far lower. Every ratio below is computed from the vendor’s sensor table as URL divided by minimum span, with the document and date attached.

Rosemount 3051CD, 00813-0100-4001, July 2026: Range 2 and Range 4 compute near 150:1 and Range 0 about 30:1; on the 3051T line, Range 0 computes to 20:1 and Ranges 5 and 6 to 5:1.

ABB 266DSH, DS/266DSH-EN Rev S, 2023: codes A and B compute to 20:1, code E to about 30:1, and codes F to S to 100:1; the document tells buyers, in capitals, to select the sensor code with the lowest ratio.

Yokogawa, June 2026: EJA110E capsule F computes to 10:1 against 100:1 on M, H and V, and the EJX110A reaches 200:1 on M and H.

Endress+Hauser Cerabar M, TI00436P: the feature list says turn down up to 100:1 while a footnote caps factory calibration at 20:1, and the document does not reconcile the two.

WIKA makes the counter-argument from the buyer’s side: for some process transmitters a ratio up to 5:1 is neutral for accuracy, and a 20:1 figure beside a 300:1 figure can sway a purchase for an application that needs neither (Turndown – Are exceptionally high values a good sales point?). Treat it as an attributed view, not a specification.

Which Model Fits Your Span? (Comparison Table)

Read four things off the datasheet: the URL, the minimum calibrated span, the accuracy figure and where it is stated, and the capsule code. If your process span sits at or above the capsule’s minimum you have a specification; if it sits below, no setting will fix it.

Narrow and wide spans both exist in the site catalogue: the ifm PI2798 flush sensor covers -12.4 to 250 mbar (ifm PI2798 flush pressure sensor), and the Danfoss MBS 1650 covers 0 to 250 bar (Danfoss MBS 1650 pressure transmitter). On a pump line, the span choice also changes loop stability (pressure sensor for water pump).

Choose the output at the same time. A switching device such as the OMRON E8F2, a gauge-pressure switch with an open-collector output and no 4-20 mA signal (OMRON E8F2 pressure sensors), has no ratio to quote. The ifm PG2799 puts a 4-20 mA analog output and programmable switching outputs in one body, per its specification table (ifm PG2799 flush pressure transmitter).

Every row uses the same fields, taken from the vendor’s own document; Simply Buy is a multi-brand distributor and supply-chain integrator, not a manufacturer, and nothing here is a Simply Buy test result.

For a BOM line or an RFQ, send the model with your required LRV and URV, the pressure type and the process conditions, and we confirm the capsule that carries your span and the accuracy at your re-range before the order ships.

What Happens to the 4-20 mA Signal at Deep Turndown?

Turndown exists on the analog branch, not the discrete one, because only an analog output can be re-scaled across a range (digital vs analog sensors).

A deep ratio also spends resolution. Texas Instruments states that commercial 4-20 mA transmitters resolve between 12 and 16 bits, and 16-bit systems deliver an effective 13 to 15 bits depending on signal bandwidth (Designing 4mA to 20mA loop-powered transmitters). As an estimate rather than a vendor claim, turning down to 20:1 costs about 4.3 bits of resolution, assuming the bits spread evenly over the used span.

So an alarm point near the bottom of a deeply turned-down span has the fewest bits left to describe it, even when the reference accuracy looks comfortable. If the important decision happens at the low end, spend span there. The site’s 4-20 mA pressure transmitter wiring guide covers the loop and its wiring (wiring topology for 4-20 mA loops). The PLC analog input guide covers where the loop lands (PLC digital and analog I/O guide).

What Changes When the Measurement Is Flow?

On a differential-pressure (DP) flow service, square-root extraction turns the measured differential pressure into a flow rate: the transmitter outputs the square root of the DP, so the signal stays linear in flow. That square root changes the arithmetic: flow range is the square root of DP range, so a 10:1 flow span needs 100:1 DP span. Emerson’s DP flow guide prints the relationship as 2:1 flow on 4:1 DP up to 20:1 flow on 400:1 DP.

A flow accuracy claim is usually stated at a flow range, not a DP range. Rosemount publishes ±1.80% of flow rate at an 8:1 flow range for Ranges 2 to 3, so reading that 8:1 as a DP ratio misreads it by the square.

Does Turndown Still Matter on a High-Pressure Line?

Static pressure, the standing line pressure a DP transmitter sits under, enters as an error term that depends on the capsule rather than the headline ratio. Inside one Rosemount model, zero error on Ranges 2 to 3 is ±0.05% of URL per 1000 psi against ±0.25% on Range 1, five times larger on the lower-range cell. Yokogawa publishes a capsule-dependent zero term per 6.9 MPa (1000 psi): ±(0.04% span + 0.208% URL) on the EJA110E F capsule against ±0.028% URL on M, H and V.

The installed limit is often not the sensor’s limit. ABB’s sensors F to S carry an overpressure figure of 21 MPa (210 bar, 3045 psi), but the datasheet caps flange-mounted versions at the flange rating: ASME B16.5 Class 150 at 230 psi and EN 1092-1 PN16 at 13.5 bar. A higher-URL sensor does not raise the pressure the assembly may see.

For a genuinely high-pressure sensor, Cerabar M covers process pressure up to 400 bar (6000 psi), where the 400 bar cell’s smallest span is 20 bar, and the ifm PM1608 is a 0 to 400 bar flush unit with a 2-wire 4-20 mA output (ifm PM1608 flush pressure sensor). There, the flange rating and the static-pressure error decide whether the measurement survives, not the headline ratio.

How Do You Buy Without Getting a Mis-Ranged Unit?

Write the RFQ from fields, not adjectives: model; pressure type; URL; minimum calibrated span; the accuracy figure and where it is stated; output type; document revision and date; plus the process conditions that move the numbers, such as fluid, temperature, static or line pressure, ambient and vibration.

A usable quote returns the capsule or sensor code, the configured LRV and URV, the pressure type, the output, and the accuracy at your re-range. A cross-brand replacement holds only when the pressure type, the span and the accuracy at turndown all match.

Simply Buy is a multi-brand distributor and supply-chain integrator, so the range is assembled across brands rather than made in one plant. The pressure-side range sits in the pressure sensors category on this site, and the same catalogue carries adjacent families, such as the SICK IME12-04BPSZC0S inductive proximity sensor (ENFERMO IME12-04BPSZC0S), a position-sensing device rather than a pressure device.

On a selection request, the team responds within 12 hours and gives a two-option recommendation on important projects, one for performance and one for value, plus 2 to 3 parameter-verified cross-brand options when a model is unavailable. Genuine goods and certificate documentation travel with the dispatch; the published warranty runs for one year, and delivery is DDP with overseas-warehouse dispatch where available.

Send the model and the numbers by WhatsApp or email through the contact page (contact Simply Buy). You will get a capsule recommendation you can check against the vendor document, not a headline ratio.

Pressure Transmitter Turndown Ratio: FAQs

1. Is turndown the same as rangeability?

The words overlap. Fuji Electric calls rangeability turndown ratio; the control.com textbook divides maximum allowable span by minimum allowable span, and Instrumentation Tools divides URL by calibrated span.

2. Is the accuracy figure on the datasheet the one I get?

No. Accuracy is stated at a turndown, and deeper spans carry wider error. Siemens allows its accuracy only at maximum measuring span, and Endress+Hauser conditions its total error on Turndown 1:1.

3. Can I set any range inside the URL?

Only down to the capsule’s minimum calibrated span, whatever the configuration software allows. A 1000 psi URL at 20:1 stops at a 50 psi span.

4. Why does the accuracy change when I re-range?

Because the error budget mixes a span term with a URL-proportional one: Siemens’s formula in r, Yokogawa’s ±(0.005 + B x URL/span)%, and Rosemount’s ±(A% URL + B% span) bands.

5. What changes for a 4-20mA pressure sensor on a DP flow service?

Flow range is the square root of DP range, so 10:1 flow needs 100:1 DP. Use a flow-accuracy figure at its stated flow range; Rosemount’s ±1.80% is stated at 8:1 flow, not at 8:1 DP.

What Should You Do Next?

The ratio on a quote is only as useful as the span it is measured against, so read the denominator, find where the accuracy is stated, and check the capsule’s minimum span against your process span. Those three steps turn a sales figure into a specification you can defend in a bid. The next action is to write those values on one line and send them to a supplier for a capsule recommendation you can verify.

Obtenga una cotización gratis

Quick answer: A pressure transmitter turndown ratio is how far a transmitter can be re-ranged below its widest span.
