The printed datasheet number is only one term, measured at reference conditions, not the installed answer. Simply Buy is a multi-brand distributor and supply-chain integrator that helps buyers match models across brands, confirm what the manufacturer actually publishes, and quote the documents, stock status and Incoterm an order needs.

Two quote sheets land on the same desk. One lists a flush-mount transmitter at “characteristics deviation < ±0.5 % of span”. The other lists a compact pressure sensor at “repeat accuracy ±1 % FS max” (a full-scale percentage). Both figures come from the manufacturer, and neither describes the device that will sit on your header at 55 °C after a year of service. That comparison belongs to procurement and engineering teams sourcing across brands.

The method here ranks no brand on accuracy. It turns any published figure into one comparable number, total error at your own span and temperature excursion, then works through an example you can re-run and turn into an RFQ line.

What Does a Pressure Transmitter Accuracy Figure Actually Tell You?

A datasheet headline figure is almost always a reference accuracy, not a single measurement. It bundles three effects: non-linearity (how far the output departs from a straight line), hysteresis (the difference between going up and coming back down) and repeatability (how closely repeated readings at the same pressure agree). Fuji Electric calls it the combined effects of the three “under these defined conditions” (Fuji Electric), and those conditions are controlled, usually a bench at a stable ambient temperature.

Why Is the Headline Number Called Reference Accuracy?

Because it is measured against a reference, not your process. Vendors name the same idea differently: some write “basic accuracy”, and ifm publishes a “characteristics deviation” for its PG2799, so check what the vendor bundled in.

What Does the Datasheet Leave Out?

Everything that depends on where it is installed. Fuji Electric lists five influences that push an installed transmitter off its reference figure: ambient temperature, static pressure, stability over time, supply voltage and mounting position. Supply voltage matters because the loop must keep the transmitter inside its operating window, covered in our 4-20 mA pressure transmitter wiring guide. For gauge and absolute transmitters, the static-pressure effect is nil; for a differential-pressure device, it belongs in the budget. Our guide to the types of pressure sensors sorts out the families.

What Is the Difference Between % of Span, % FS and % of URL?

Every accuracy figure is a percentage of something, and the datasheet does not always say which. Span is the gap between the limits you set; the upper range limit (URL) is the sensor’s maximum rated range.

Printed form

Measured against

What re-ranging does

% of calibrated span

the span you configured

percentage holds; absolute error shrinks with the span

%FS (full scale)

the device’s rated full-scale range

absolute band fixed by the rating, not your span

% of URL / max range

the sensor’s maximum rated range

percentage grows every time you shrink the span

On a fixed-range device, the rated full scale and the upper range limit are the same, so %FS and % of URL collapse into one. On a re-rangeable instrument, they differ, and that gap is where quote comparisons go wrong.

Why Does Re-Ranging Change the Percentage?

Pondus Instruments runs the arithmetic on a 0–10 bar gauge transmitter with a 0.1 % of max-range reference accuracy. The absolute band is 0.001 × 10 bar, or ±0.01 bar. At the full 0–10 bar, that is ±0.1 % of span; re-ranged to 0–1 bar, the same ±0.01 bar becomes ±1 % of span. The band never moved; the span shrank tenfold. Turndown is the ratio of maximum range to the span you use, so 10:1 means a span one tenth of full scale. Pondus notes its PT600 reaches 100:1 turndown. On a re-rangeable 4-20 mA pressure sensor, the base matters most.

What Are the Five Terms in a Total Error Budget?

Total error is what the instrument does in service, not on the bench. Five terms cover the regular contributors, and each must be converted to the same base.

Term

What it covers

When it applies

Reference accuracy

non-linearity, hysteresis, repeatability

always, at the span you calibrate

Temperatura ambiente

zero and span shift across the excursion

always; from the vendor’s thermal coefficients

Static or line pressure

zero and span shift from line pressure

DP transmitters; nil for gauge and absolute

Overpressure

shift after a stated overpressure event

when the process can over-range the device

Stability

long-term drift over a stated period

sized by your calibration interval

Two terms need unpacking. A thermal coefficient (TC) is the shift per fixed temperature step, usually quoted per 10 K, so a TC span of 0.15 % of span / 10 K means the span moves 0.15 % for every 10 K of change; TC zero is the same idea at the zero point. Long-term stability is drift over a stated period, often per year, and it decides how long a calibration holds.

Vendors do not all publish the same list: InstrumentationTools uses five terms and splits static pressure into zero and span effects, while Fuji Electric publishes four, dropping stability. The two totals are not comparable, so use the list your data supports.

Do You Add the Terms or Combine Them as a Root-Sum-Square?

Two rules turn the terms into one number.

Root-sum-square (RSS). total = ±√(E1² + E2² + E3² + …). Square each term, add the squares, then take the square root. This is the probable-error form, and it assumes the terms are independent and will not all peak at once.

Worst-case sum. total = |E1| + |E2| + |E3| + …. Every term at its limit together: the bound for a safety or custody argument.

Neither rule equals a vendor’s total error band. SensorsONE defines a total error band (TEB) as the spread between the most negative and most positive deviation from the true measurement, inside a stated temperature range (SensorsONE). Setra calls TEB the worst-case error over a compensated range for an industrial pressure sensor, built from accuracy, zero offset, span offset and both temperature offsets (Setra). A TEB is a bounded worst case tied to a temperature window; an RSS result is a probable figure.

How Do You Run a Pressure Transmitter Accuracy Calculation?

Fix the span and calibration range.

Fix the ambient excursion and the calibration interval.

Pull each term from the manufacturer’s datasheet.

Convert every term to a percentage of your calibrated span.

Combine as a root-sum-square or a worst-case sum.

Step 4 catches people out: a %FS term must be converted to your span before it can join a percent-of-span term.

What Does the Worked Calculation Look Like?

The ifm PG2799 is a useful case because ifm publishes the thermal and long-term terms a full budget needs. The figures are ifm’s own, from the official PG2799 page, at turn-down 1:1 and in percent of span, with characteristics deviation defined as linearity including hysteresis and repeatability to DIN EN IEC 62828-1. The same product appears in our ifm PG2799 flush pressure sensor listing.

Characteristics deviation: < ±0.5 % of span

Temperature coefficient, zero point: < ±0.05 % of span / 10 K (0…70 °C)

Temperature coefficient, span: < ±0.15 % of span / 10 K (0…70 °C)

Long-term stability: < ±0.1 % of span per year

Measuring range: −1…1 bar, a 2,000 mbar span; output 4…20 mA

Run those terms over a 40 K excursion inside ifm’s 0…70 °C window and one year: reference term 0.50 %; zero-point TC 0.05 × 4 = 0.20 %; span TC 0.15 × 4 = 0.60 %; stability 0.10 %.

Root-sum-square: √(0.50² + 0.20² + 0.60² + 0.10²) = √0.66 = 0.81 % of span, about ±16 mbar on a 2,000 mbar span. Worst-case sum: 0.50 + 0.20 + 0.60 + 0.10 = 1.40 % of span, about ±28 mbar. At 20 K the same four terms give √0.36 = 0.60 % of span, about ±12 mbar.

That is a calculation for this article from ifm’s published inputs, not ifm’s published total error. The root-sum-square form assumes the four terms are independent. There is no static-pressure term because the PG2799 is a relative gauge device, and these four terms are the ones ifm publishes for it. IFM states that characteristic deviation becomes 1.5 % of span in the extended display range, and lists the PG2799 as discontinued, with the PG1709 as the alternative.

IFM Flush Pressure Sensor with Analogue Display PG2799

Which Term Dominates the Result?

The span temperature coefficient. It contributes 0.60 of the 1.40 % worst-case total, so the excursion size decides the answer: halve it from 40 K to 20 K and the RSS figure falls from 0.81 % to 0.60 %. The gap between RSS and the worst-case sum is the price of assuming the terms will not peak together: fine for a routine loop, wrong for a custody argument.

Why Can’t You Compare Two Datasheets Directly?

Take the second quote from the opening. The Omron E8F2 datasheet, revision dated 2015.8, publishes repeat accuracy ±1 %FS max, linearity on the linear output ±1 %FS max, display accuracy ±3 %FS ±1 digit, temperature influence ±3 %FS and voltage influence ±1.5 %FS (Omron E8F2 datasheet). Its rated ranges are 0–100 kPa, 0–1 MPa and 0 to −101 kPa. Every figure is %FS, measured against the rated range, so beside a percent-of-span figure it is not yet comparable; our own Omron E8F2 pressure sensor listing carries the same family.

Two datasheets can agree on the printed number and still differ. The Danfoss MBS 3000 record in our catalogue, part 060G1455, lists “accuracy (typical) ≤ ±0.5 % FS” with a 0–10 bar range and a 4-20 mA output (Danfoss 060G1455). That is a typical value as listed in a supplier parameter table, not a manufacturer datasheet figure, so keep it out of any ordering.

The next trap is family, not unit. Simply Buy also lists the ENFERMO IME12-04BPSZC0S, whose datasheet carries two numbers that look as if they belong here: hysteresis 5–15 % and reproducibility ≤2 % of Sr. Neither is a pressure-accuracy figure. The IME12-04BPSZC0S is an inductive proximity sensor, not a pressure device; those numbers describe the switching behaviour of a 4 mm sensing-range switch. Our inductive proximity sensor accuracy and interference notes cover what they mean.

So the three figures rest on three constructs: characteristics deviation in percent of span, repeat accuracy in %FS, and a typical %FS value from a supplier table. No accuracy ranking across them is supportable.

Which Pressure Transmitter Fits Your Range and Conditions?

Each figure stays in its own unit and scope.

Option

Published figure, in its source’s own unit and scope

What it means for your decision

ifm PG2799, flush pressure transmitter

Characteristics deviation < ±0.5 % of span (turn down 1:1; linearity incl. hysteresis and repeatability, DIN EN IEC 62828-1), plus published TC zero/span and long-term stability terms

The only row with published thermal and long-term terms, so the full budget can be run; being discontinued, with the PG1709 as the alternative

Omron E8F2, digital pressure sensor

Repeat accuracy and linear output both ±1 %FS max, with display, temperature and voltage influences on the same full-scale base

Separates switching repeat accuracy from linear-output linearity, but the figures are %FS, not percent of span (revision dated 2015.8)

Danfoss MBS 3000, 060G1455

Accuracy (typical) ≤ ±0.5 % FS as listed in a supplier parameter table; 0–10 bar; 4-20 mA

A second brand at the same printed order of magnitude, but a typical value as listed, so not a ranked equal

ifm PA3023, ceramic pressure transmitter

No accuracy figure is quoted here

A non-hygienic ceramic option when your span is wider than the PG2799’s 2,000 mbar (0–25 bar)

How Do You Read This Comparison Table?

Read across, not down. One row yields a full total-error figure, once you supply an excursion and an interval. Two give %FS figures that must be converted before they join the same sum. The fourth carries no accuracy figure. No industrial pressure sensor here wins on accuracy, because the constructs are not symmetric; the comparison stays unresolved. The pressure sensors category is where you browse across brands; if you only need a trip point, our pressure switch vs pressure sensor comparison covers when a switch is the right answer.

If you have a BOM line and a defensible target, send both. A multi-brand supplier adds model matching against the exact code and a cross-brand alternative where the original is hard to source; our fabricantes de sensores industriales overview shows the brand spread.

What Should You Write in the RFQ?

A pressure transmitter accuracy calculation only earns its keep if it survives the quote, so write these as separate lines.

The span and calibration range, with units, and the figure as percent of span, the only base that survives a re-range.

Reference conditions and the ambient excursion, as the actual temperature difference across the year.

A target total error as percent of span. Fuji Electric publishes service-class averages of 0.5 % (plant safety and efficiency), 1.0 % (environmental control), 1.5 % (SCADA and distributed control) and 2.0 % (plant monitoring) of the calibrated range. That page calls them averages, so treat them as guidance, not a standard.

Output and supply: for a 4-20 mA pressure sensor, the output and the voltage window the loop must meet.

The exact model code, plus the datasheet revision you priced against.

The documents required per order line, such as COC or COO, or manufacturer test certificates where the manufacturer issues them.

Stock or factory-order status, and lead time, confirmed per line item.

The Incoterm, including DDP, when you specify it.

Work from the manufacturer’s own datasheet rather than a re-typed spec page, and check its revision date; our downloads page collects manufacturer datasheets. Where landed cost or availability matters, our shipping and logistics page explains how shipments are handled.

How Do You Verify a Pressure Transmitter Accuracy Calculation After Installation?

Two checks keep the budget honest.

Zero trim under static pressure. With the transmitter installed and pressurised, trim the zero under actual static pressure where the device allows it. InstrumentationTools notes the zero effect of line pressure can sometimes be trimmed out, removing a term from the budget instead of assuming it is small.

Span against a reference. Confirm the span against a reference source at the operating conditions, not only on the bench.

Pressure Transmitter Accuracy: Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is ±0.5 % FS the Same as ±0.5 % of Span?

No. %FS is measured against the rated full scale; % of span against the range you configured. On a fixed-range device used at full scale, they can coincide; on a re-rangeable transmitter, they separate as soon as you turn the span down.

2. What Accuracy Class Does a Plant Normally Need?

No single figure fits every process; the answer depends on your span and your temperature excursion. Fuji Electric’s own guidance runs from 0.5 % of the calibrated range for plant safety and efficiency to 2.0 % for plant monitoring, and it presents those as averages rather than limits. Use them as a starting point with your process engineer, then set your own target in percent of span.

3. How Often Should a Pressure Transmitter Be Calibrated?

Once you have run a pressure transmitter accuracy calculation, set the interval based on how fast the error budget grows, not from a default calendar. InstrumentationTools derives calibration frequency from how the budget changes with time, so the stability term and your target do the work: with ±0.1 % of span per year and a 0.5 % target, the interval is about the time for drift to reach it.

Next Step: Send Your BOM and Your Operating Conditions

Send the BOM with the four numbers that decide the answer: span, ambient excursion, target in percent of span, and model code. Add the Incoterm if it affects your landed cost.

Simply Buy is a multi-brand distributor and supply-chain integrator, not a manufacturer. Model matching and cross-brand alternatives are built from the BOM you supply; stock or factory-order status and lead time are confirmed per line item on request; order documentation is quoted per line, including COC or COO or manufacturer test certificates where the manufacturer issues them. If you specify an Incoterm such as DDP, it is stated in the quote.

The pressure transmitter accuracy calculation above is the check to run when the quote arrives: same span, same excursion, same base.
