If someone on your site touches a live wire or current starts leaking through faulty insulation, a residual current circuit breaker cuts the power before serious harm is done. That’s the job, and it’s a different job from what a standard breaker does.

The first is electric shock, most relevant in wet or damp environments like bathrooms, kitchens, and outdoor areas where the risk of accidental contact with live parts is higher.

Sensitivity Ratings: Choosing the Right Trip Threshold

The sensitivity rating tells you how much leakage current it takes to trigger a trip. Getting this right matters both for safety and for avoiding nuisance tripping.

The most common ratings are:

  • 30mA for personal protection, the standard requirement for sockets, bathrooms, and any circuit where people are likely to come into contact with electrical equipment
  • 100mA or 300mA for fire protection or as an upstream main breaker, where the goal is catching larger leakage without tripping on the small background leakage that normal electronic equipment produces

A quick note on nuisance tripping: if an RCCB trips immediately when a circuit powers up, the problem usually isn’t a faulty breaker. It’s more likely that the combined leakage from multiple electronic devices on that circuit is pushing past the 30mA threshold. Spreading those loads across separate circuits usually fixes it.

Circuit Breaker RCCB Type: AC, A, and B

Modern electronics produce different leakage waveforms, and the RCCB type needs to match what it’s likely to encounter on that circuit. Here’s how the three types break down:

Pole count comes down to your system type.

A 2 pole rccb covers single-phase systems, which is what you’ll find in residential settings and small commercial offices. A rccb double-pole configuration is the same thing described differently: two poles protecting a single-phase circuit.

For three-phase industrial systems, machinery, and larger commercial installations, a 4-pole unit is what you need. Getting the pole count wrong means the breaker either won’t fit the panel or won’t provide protection across all phases. It’s a simple spec to verify before ordering, but one that causes delays when it gets missed.

How Regional Standards Affect RCCB Selection

This is where procurement for international projects gets complicated.

Most of the world outside North America works to the IEC 61008 or IEC 61009 standards. Products certified to these are broadly accepted across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. The UK follows BS 7671, which requires RCD protection on nearly all circuits in new builds and major renovations.

North America is a different situation. The US uses Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters rather than RCCBs, with sensitivity set at 5mA rather than the 30mA standard used elsewhere.
